Best Demo Award @ ACM IMX 2023 - GoNature AR - 14.06.2023

The SURREAL 3D Computer Graphics and Augmented Reality Research Group from the MUSIC Laboratory at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in collaboration with the Built Environment and Energy Management Laboratory (EMBER Lab) from the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, won the prestigious 1st prize “Best Demo Paper Award!” at the ACM International Conference on Interactive Media Experiences (IMX) held in Nantes, France from June 12 to 15, 2023. 
 
Minas Katsiokalis recieved the award as the lead developer and presenter of the experience that was showcased. This achievement was the result of their joint efforts within VARCITIES, which is led by the EMBER Lab supervisor, Professor Dionysia Kolokotsa. The team comprised Minas Katsiokalis, Katerina Mania, Elisavet Tsekeri, Katerina Lilli, Kostas Gombakis, and Dionysia Kolokotsa.

1st Place: Innovation Category - Brackey's Game Jam 2023.1 - 06.03.2023

The students Minas KatsiokalisYiannis KritikosAndreas Polychronakis, Michalis Oikonomakis, Konstantina Mamou, Michalis Nikiforakis, Anna Minadaki, and George Protopapadakis, who are members of the Surreal Team research group led by Prof. Katerina Mania from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, participated in the Brackeys Game Jam 2023.1 global competition from February 12 to 19, 2023. Their team emerged victorious, securing 1st place worldwide in the Innovation category, surpassing more than 40 teams and their respective projects.

The team would also like to express their gratitude to Stelios Grigorakis, an undergraduate student who generously dedicated his valuable time to assist with the debugging process after the game was completed. The team’s interest in further developing the game has been reinforced with Stelios’ support.
